Memphis... Home of Elvis and the Home of Amazing BBQ! It is also the home of 21 amazing Actors that I had the honor of photographing their amazing Headshots. My trip started on Friday and trust me it was very difficult leaving my beautiful family. I hate saying goodbyes and traveling away. Lucky Ashley left before me, so it was as if I was walking her to the train with Cody like I do every day, but it was still hard to say goodbye. Saying goodbye to Cody was the worst for me because I hate leaving my little Buddy and I know how much he was going to miss me, but I did it and I got in my Uber cab and headed to LaGuardia Airport.
The flight was pretty smooth to Cincinnati, nothing special to write home about. Take off was smooth and landing was smooth, though going through security I got stopped again because of the stupid Ice Light that I have to travel with. Trust me after spending almost $700 on the light the last thing I am going to do is hit someone with it... but I understand they are doing their job.
Finally I arrived in Cincinnati and after 5 mins in the airport I was boarding my connection flight. My flight from Cincinnati to Memphis was the adventurous one. Traveling through a storm definitely has it's share of Turbulence, but this was pretty bad that even the flight attendant actually muttered, "I am surprised the Oxygen masks did not fall." That is something you really do not want to hear thousands of feet in the air.
After an hour and a half in the air we landed safely in Memphis, Tennessee!
What is a better way to start your trip in Memphis then some BBQ!!! First night Pulled Pork Sandwich from Central BBQ!
Three Days of photographing young, talented and passionate Actors is truly amazing and an honor. Going down there I knew that Headshot photographers were very few, far and in-between. If there were any they were not very good. One reason why I love photographing actors who are still in or just out of an Acting program like the University of Memphis offers is that they are always in the moment. That makes my job so easy because as I coach them they just go to the places that need to go to so we can capture that Impact shot.
The hardest part of photographing outdoors in an area you are not familiar with is trying to find areas to photograph. I was able to find some amazing spots and sometimes I found places by accident. My biggest goal was just to make everyone comfortable and gain their trust so that we can just have fun and capture images like no other. I want them loving their images and know that when they come to NY or LA or wherever their lives take them after college they are going to have the best Headshots in the business.
Actor after actor loving their images is all you can ask for. Looking at their faces when I showed them the back of the camera and seeing their eyes just get wide or watching them freak out with excitement was priceless. It was something they just never saw before and I could see their confidence take off. Conversation after conversation, I learned more about each actor and I think safe to say I made 21 new friends. Check out some of the back of the camera photos I took... Yes iPhone shots of the back of the camera.
One weird part of my trip was the fact that the hotel they put me up in is very rarely used and I actually was the only one staying in it. Yes the only one and it did kind of feel like I was in the Shining. Not going to lie I was a bit afraid to travel and explore by myself fearing that right around the corner were going to be twin little girls just staring and waiting. Joking aside University of Memphis were very accommodating and hospitable. Even when my flight got canceled and I had to stay an extra night because of the "Snow Storm of the Century" was going on in NY and all flights were canceled.
To everyone at the University of Memphis that I photographed these last few days: Casey Greer, Joshua Tucker, Maggie Robinson, Mark Lessiter, Lucas Hefner, Sarah Solarez, Bradley Waelbroek, Audrey Smith, Christopher Calderazzo, Frank Holiday, Jessica Otis, Melissa Rupprechet, Allie Huber, Jonathan Castro, David Couter, Dereck Bridgewater, Kevin Cochran, Zach El-Oqlah, Justin Burgess, Fiona Battersby, Anita "Jo" Lenhart and Jacob Allen... Never give up on your dreams! It was truly an honor to be their to not only photograph you all, but an honor to get to know you. You are all truly amazing and I cannot wait to see you all either on the stage, television or the Big Screen.
I CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN!
