What is your name and tell us a bit about who you are?
My name is Amy Novondo and I’m an actor who is currently trying to break out in the business while practicing the ways of Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.I just so happen to be a very big comic book fan.
When did you first start reading comic books?
I first started getting into comics through my brother when I was very young and then I got into the Power Rangers and X-Men when my mom would let me watch them.
What was the first series you started reading?
Since Batman The Animated series was one of the first things I discovered on my own I picked up some Batman comics first along with the original Teen Titans and I just spiraled from there.
What comic book character, whether superhero, villain or other do you most identify with… I.E. Alter Ego?
I feel like every women can now relate to Wonder Woman after watching the movie which I think is amazing but other than her I can relate to America Chavez.
As an actor I’ve had the amazing opportunity to audition for a superhero show on the CW which I will not name, twice. And each time the casting notice called for diversity or a woman of color. But they ended up casting white women each time and it’s very disheartening to see that a woman of color can’t have a chance at being a superhero. America Chavez is the first Latina female to have her own comic book and to me she represents hope. Hope because I can finally see myself being represented in a culture that I never thought would want or welcome a Latina super heroine. I can only hope to be as badass as she is and strive to have the confidence that she possesses and be the role model she is to other little girls who like me and need to see our culture represented in the media. Representation in the media is just the begin. She matters and that means I matter.
What advice do you have to younger comic book fans who use this amazing world as an escape from the harsh realities of life?
The advice I have for younger comic book fans is that don’t be afraid to like what you like because other kids make fun of you. Nerd culture is a lot more excepting now compared to when I was a kid. Be proud of who you are and never let anyone make you feel guilty for liking comics or anything of that sort because that’s what makes you unique.
